Airline : EgyptAir

Layover : 22 Hrs

Layover : 22 Hrs

Desserts in Desert

Right In front of the Tour Eiffel across the Seine, there is “Palais de Chaillot”. Like any other monument in Paris, it is simply magnificent! But its importance is compounded when you factor in its location: the gallery view of Paris! At around 8 AM in the morning, the place was just starting to flock with pigeons and tourists alike. Many newlywed were specifically there to photograph a perfect frame for their fairy tale: a backdrop of the rising sun behind the Eiffel! Paris is the city of love, even if you are single: you simply fall in love with the city! The weather was clear, the city was spirited and amidst this, I was sitting on the most uninteresting 26th or so stair to the top, clenching my left knee. It was hurting so much, that I was not even sure that I’ll be able to take my 2 PM train! How did this happen? Let me rewind it back 32 hours!

It all started back in Geneva when I was planning my next day. You might remember from my last blog that I decided to trek on Mount Saleve, impromptu! Mistake No 1: NEVER trek without planning, no matter how much experienced you are. The trek’s description was “Medium” (which it is, for a regular alpine trekker!) The last time I trekked was 18 months before on the Harishchandragad Fort in the Sahyadris, India. Then “the Netherlands” happened and the only thing I climbed on was my bike! Still, the sweet thought of being able to trek again surpassed my initial hesitation and I set my alarm for 6.30 AM. After a quick breakfast, I hopped on a bus to the village of Veyrier, on the border of Switzerland and France. As it was an impromptu plan, I was wearing just my Canvas shoes, which was my second mistake. Not only they had a horrible grip but their flat sole made climbing painfully difficult. While enjoying the countryside from the bus, I saw the mountain getting bigger and daunting! I got down at the last stop and started to look around. I saw some people with trekking gears and asked them about the trek how I read something online and just came here to check out! As Geneva is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, they didn’t understand a thing of what I was asking. I decided to follow my instincts (and a big group of people!)

My instincts were right! Pretty soon I was a part of a large group who was led by some very experienced mountaineers. The most experienced was David, a 60 something but extremely fit leader. First, he asked everyone which language they felt comfortable in, and for the first time, I was able to spot a small minority group of English speakers. (We quickly became friends later on!) For us, he gave us a short brief about the Saleve and then an option: Either to climb via a scenic route in 5 hours or just follow him to the top on a difficult 3-hour route. No contest here, we all chose 1st one almost unanimously! Our small group of 10 was led by Monica: another seasoned trekker who climbed Saleve every Sunday for almost 15 years! We received some instructions from our leader, and then my first adventure in the Alps began!

We started our trek from the bottom station of the cable car (Telepherique). With a steady pace, we started going along the mountain curve, gradually increasing the altitude. And slowly along with the course, the mother nature started unravelling its beauty. On our way to the top, we came across some breathtaking alpine landscapes.

The view of lush Grass plains with an occasional glider landing on it, eating fallen apples and oranges from trees along the way, crossing streams of water and climbing rocky patches: all was simply picturesque. Panoramic cityscapes of Geneva always accompanied us, albeit changing their perspective as we went up! In my opinion, alpine trekking is strikingly similar to trekking in the Himalayas, but with better facilities and a bit lower difficulty.

After 4.5 hours of arduous trekking, we reached the top. A spectacular view of nearby mountains and a serene Buddhist monastery: the perfect combination to rest your tired body and soul! That’s the reward that I was waiting for! My first alpine trek was a success. Unfortunately, my left leg was already paining a lot by this point.

The shortest way to descend from there is to fly a glider! As we couldn’t choose this option, we all decided to descend the mountain by the Telepherique, i.e a cable car.

<iframe src=”https://medium.com/media/99ddebe90e290274ee7ed6afc3fc688e” frameborder=0></iframe>

On the bus back, I bid adieu to my new friends. I thought of resting a bit, but my sole was still hungry for more of Geneva. I went to the city to explore more. After roaming for a while, I boarded the bus to Paris at 11 in the night and prepared myself for the most annoying 7 hours of my trip.

At around 5.30, the bus slipped into the sleeping city. The black canvas of the night was gradually getting painted with shades of amber. The bus stopped in a suburb at far south of Paris, reminding me of the terrible pain in my left leg. In response to my: “How to go to the Eiffel?” query, a nice lady from the bus literally held my hand and dropped me to the nearest metro station, explaining the route on the way! Being a Monday morning, Parisians were already rushing to catch their metro on time. The network is mostly underground but it pops out in the right places just so you can admire the beauty of Paris. The long stairs of stations (without elevators and escalators) quickly made me realize that this leg pain is not an ordinary one. I missed 4 consecutive metros, just while changing the lines! (Thank god that the metro runs every 3 minutes!)

I trudged my way towards the big old rusty radio tower. The symbol of Paris, which was meant to be a temporary exhibit, was once loathed by Parisians for its ugliness! How ironic!

To see the iron lady from a better angle, I plodded towards the ‘Palais de Chaillot’, across the Seine. Walking a kilometre or so, I just crashed on the stairs.

This is the point where you contemplate about your life choices. Did I go a bit overboard with planning the solo trip? Definitely. Was it dangerous and painful to do all the activities at once?: Way over the line! Was it worth it? Totally! I kicked (!) back the pain and created a game plan to survive Paris.

Step 1: Get Some Medicine, ASAP
I googled and went to the pharmacy right in front of Eiffel. Thankfully they knew some English and gave me Ibuprofen, Diclofenac ointment and a crepe bandage. I could at least walk now.

Step 2: See all the monuments yet avoid walking.

This was a difficult one and I hate exploring the city like window shopping. But sadly, there was no other option. Fortunately, I found a middle ground. I hopped on bus 89 and got down at the famous army museum. Walking through Les Invalides, I crossed the Seine on the famous Pont Alexandre III bridge. From there, I hopped on another bus to Louvre. As I didn’t have enough time to spend in the museum anyway, I simply ate crêpe and walked along. From Pont des Arts: Another famous bridge (where you can see the two islands and the mini statue of liberty) to the Louvre Pyramid, and then finally to the iconic Place de la Concorde, the walk turned out to be not so small!

I walked almost 70 Km in 3 days, including 15km steep trek! My last stop was Gare du Nord Railway station. Exploring the remaining city through city buses, I realized that I had seen only a small fraction of Paris. I promised myself to return to Paris, with more days to spare. With tired body and soul, I boarded Thales High-Speed train to Brussels. The adventure was over, but my trip continued!

PS: Later I found out that I badly injured my left knee ligament and it needed 7 sessions of physiotherapy to recover. Such a trip is definitely not recommended, still totally worth it! :-p

My adventures in France: Mount Saleve and Paris

The Weekend Adventures, Part 1

Part 1: Geneva And CERN

There is a very popular phenomenon called the “Butterfly Effect”. The idea being: every decision you take has far-reaching implications in the future, and maybe not just yours! Your present is just one path in the decision tree and it could have been completely different if you haven’t had the coffee, that particular morning! I don’t know exactly what decisions weighed in this, but 2 months ago, I roamed in Geneva, had a tour of CERN, managed to do a challenging alpine trek, and jaunted in Paris. Now, when I look back, it seems impossible how I was able to fit all of this in just one weekend!

The French-speaking town of Geneva ( or Genève!) needs no introduction. Situated right on the border of Switzerland and France, the city is as cosmopolitan as it gets. This abode of the United Nations and numerous important organizations is also famous for its impeccable natural beauty. This Peace Capital is a perfect go-to destination for a weekender.

On a bright, clear Saturday morning, my flight landed on the Cointrin Airport of Geneva. The first thing I noticed is how expensive Switzerland is: Very! If you go to a supermarket to buy something for a quick bite, you will easily spend upwards of 15 CHF (13 €) and still be quite hungry! But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with some money saving tips! In Geneva, you get a free trip to the city centre with public transport when you arrive by plane. Cool, right? Even cooler: you will get a free public transport pass if you live in any hostel or hotel in the city! (The pass is valid for the entire duration of your stay, and yes, you are welcome!)

It might sound a bit clichéd, but as a kid, I was super fascinated by mysteries of the universe. Astronomy was my first love and soon enough I was philandering with Physics. Since then, CERN and NASA have been like a Mecca to me. For me, not visiting CERN when visiting Geneva would have been a sin! After ditching my satchel at the hostel, I hopped on tram №18, straight to the CERN. There are some permanent and temporary exhibitions on the premises, but the real gem is the guided tour. And believe me, it’s not easy to get into! First of all, the English version of the tour is only offered a couple times a week. You have to book the slot online, exactly 15 days in advance, at 8.00 in the morning. If you are lucky, then you will be one of the 11 participants which will enjoy a guided tour, inside CERN facilities, accompanied by a profound scientist.

We started our tour in the auditorium of the visitor’s centre. We were shown a short yet amazing movie which introduced us briefly to its history and the facility. Did you know that the reason you are able to read this post is due to technology which was developed at the CERN! The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is one of humanity’s biggest collaborative project (only second to the international space station), and that meant transferring large scientific data, all across the world. Transferring result files was hardly a viable solution. So they asked Tim Berners-Lee to develop CERN’s own framework for transferring files digitally, named ENQUIRE. The rest is history and it became the basis for the World Wide Web as we know now!

https://youtu.be/h_DmpTLixyQ

We were then separated into two groups. A Dutch scientist (I am so sorry to forget his name) who worked on the superconductors in the LHC was our “Tour Guide”! Giving intriguing and intricate details about how the collider works, he was also happy to answer all our dumb questions. I particularly remember a funny one: Someone asked: “Is there any possibility that the high energy particle collision can create a black hole?” His reply to it was “Even if it did, as everything will get sucked into the black hole, there will be nothing left to worry about!”

Our next stop was the main control room. For such a big facility, it is a bit of a disappointment. Just a bunch of computers, big screens with important data and researchers drinking coffee. The facility data can be remotely accessed, so no reason to be physically there. However, right upstairs we were shown a mind-blowing 3D movie, explaining how LHC aka giant race track works! The LHC has different phases such as Injection (Injecting particles), Ramp (Accelerating them to 99.999999% of the speed of light), Collision etc. The collision is detected by very sensitive detectors in 4 different parts of LHC depending on the ongoing experiment. It sort of “photographs” the moment of the collision, gathering up to 1 petabyte of raw data per second. Then, the data is processed and shared worldwide for analysis. The whole process is continuous and runs 24x7 except for some part of the year.

<iframe src=”https://medium.com/media/5630e426221074997c0960b906eb412a” frameborder=0></iframe>

The last destination was a visit to the precursor of LHC: the Synchrocyclotron (SC). Built just after the 2nd world war, the SC was not only a sizeable scientific feat but also a step towards the world peace. A machine which brought together the brightest minds in the world to research on, regardless of their nationality, religion or political views. After countless contributions to the major scientific breakthroughs, it was retired in 1990. Now it’s a backdrop for showing its construction and history, quite literally! A spectacular laser show on the SC left us awestruck by the achievements of mankind and it also marked the ending of our 2 hr long tour. After spending some more time in the temporary & permanent museums I still wanted to keep exploring this wonderful institution! Sadly, CERN was about to close and before they kick me out, I wanted to purchase some geeky memorabilia.

Later that day, I got a chance to roam around. As they say, it is really the smallest of the big cities. With alps in the south, the town faces Lake Geneva in the north, which creates some spectacular panoramic views. In the middle of the lake is Jet d’Eau, literally a giant jet of water! With a height of 140mtr, it is one of the tallest fountains in the world. Like Eiffel tower, you can see it from everywhere in the city. Walking in the old town and exploring various sights and monuments is really a must experience activity. Migros, one of the biggest (and duty-free!) shopping malls in Geneva, is a shopper’s paradise. They have a section as huge as a mini supermarket dedicated just for the chocolates. If you are into Chanels and Guccis, Switzerland is no less than a ‘Prada’ise!

After a sort of hectic (!) day, I returned to my hostel at 8 PM. Scrolling “Top 10 things to do in Geneva”, I was just planning my second and last day in Geneva. Just then, I noticed “Rando Saleve”, a hiking group which treks every Sunday to a nearby mountain in the Alps. Without considering the fact that I was wearing canvas shoes or I had to travel to Paris the next night, I thought: Why Not!!

To be continued in Part 2…

My adventures in Swtizerland: Geneva and CERN

I am sorry my Anglophonic friends, this post is going to be in my native language, Marathi. I won’t recommend using google translate, it might end up in something weird and eerily funny! But if you don’t mind or just want to see the beautiful pictures, go ahead!

Single journey, day ticket, group discount

The first thing I did after getting an acceptance for a hackathon in Trieste was to google what the heck Trieste is! Once a major port town and now an abode to one of the most important synchrotron in the world, it is certainly a destination neglected by many for their Europe trip. But, believe me, if you don’t want to miss grandiose architecture and amazing landscapes, you should definitely plan to visit this hidden gem.

This Italy’s northeastern province is a tale in itself. Sandwiched between the Adriatic sea and Slovenia, it has a rich history and equally beautiful landscapes. Being a port town, Trieste was an amalgamation of different nationalities: Italian, Slovenian, Austrian, Croatian and Greeks. From Habsburg monarchs to Fascist occupation to being an independent state and then finally settling down with Italy, Trieste has changed its flags quite a lot of times.

My train arrived at the station pretty late in the night. The hotel booked for me was not in Trieste but in Basovizza, an outskirt town which is closer to Slovenia than Trieste. Checking google maps and rummaging through the information, I barely hopped on the bus. Then, I was confronted with my first horror: Bus tickets are not sold on the bus but at the train station or tobacco shops. With nothing open in sight and no chance to get another bus, I stood in despair thinking about what to do. Miraculously, a lady understood my condition and tried to help me with her broken English. Giving me instructions where to get off the bus, she kindly offered her extra ticket. Over my trip, I have witnessed the friendliness of Italians a multiple times. Even if they don’t know English, they will try to construct broken sentences to give you directions. But Trieste was just the next level. Over the next three days, I was helped in numerous ways by unknown strangers, to whom I can’t thank enough.

I alighted the bus at a deserted crossroad, my hotel nowhere to be seen. I walked up to the only house which seemed awake and suddenly there it was! A small yet elegant hotel with a beautiful courtyard. I received a warm welcome from the hosts and after a quick shower, I slumbered in a bed.

The next morning, I was greeted with a scenic view of a typical Italian countryside. After a quick morning walk, I was bewitched to the extent that I almost forgot the reason why I was here: AttractYoung Hackathon organized by ATTRACT and CERN IdeaSquare.

During a sumptuous breakfast, I met my fellow hackers. It felt like the whole of Europe was here. One was pursuing masters in Material Science from Finland while another friend was learning chemistry in Slovenia. We had to come up with innovative solutions for societal challenges like world hunger, and the best one wins the trip to CERN! We were teamed up based on our topic and were assigned a coach which was an expert in that industry. The AREA innovation park was our proving ground for the next two days. Intensive brainstorming on ideas with people from different backgrounds, nationalities and cultures with lip-smacking pasta and desserts to complement it, a hackathon could not be better.

Although our group did not win, we sure learned a lot! After the hackathon, we visited the Elettra Synchrotron facility. In layman’s term, a distant cousin of the big brother in Geneva (Yes, the Large Hadron Collider). The facility is operated 24x7 and experiments are performed by scientists all over the world. This research can be used in pretty much everything: From making a stronger material using nanoscience to https://www.elettra.trieste.it/science/top-stories/the-teeth-of-a-prehistoric-fetus-give-us-information-about-the-last-months-of-a-mother-and-child-who-lived-27-000-years-bp.html.

My schedule got over by 5 in the evening and me and Christian, my Italian friend from the hackathon decided to explore the city. Situated right between the green hills and blue sea, the port of Trieste is inexplicably beautiful! With Roman, Germanic and East European influence, architecture in Trieste offers a unique relic of its past. The stone pier, Molo Audace, offers riveting views during the sunset: of the sea as well as the city. Piazza Unità d’Italia is spectacular enough during the day, but complementing the sunset, it reaches a whole new level!

As the sun goes down, Trieste starts bustling with people shopping, eating and drinking! Here, I had the best pizza and ice cream in my life, hands down! It was a typical Neapolitan pizzeria which baked in the wood fire oven. The pizza was thin crust with delicious vegetables and fresh cream, and it melted in the mouth faster than an ice cream. Even after eating a whole 8”, I was still craving for more! Don’t even bother asking me the name of the pizza; every pizzeria comes up with their own name and way to make it! (Here it was kings and queens).

My flight back was scheduled at 8 AM from the Treviso airport, so I had to catch the first train in the morning. I bid a farewell to my friends and returned to my hotel. As the train pulled out of the station, the dawn was slowly taking over the glimmering night light of Trieste. My trip was over, but the journey was just getting started.

If procrastination is a disease, it’s probably embedded in my DNA. Generally, people procrastinate the things they hate to do, I procrastinate everything! I did this trip back in April but I was only able to write about it now. I toured many places meanwhile and unfortunately writing was the second priority. I will try to the next one a bit sooner (than the next season of Game of Thrones 😅) See you soon!

My Travels in Italy: Trieste and Elettra Synchrotrone

Italy Through My Eyes, Part 1

“The Venetian Affair”

When it comes to describing what is Venice, I get truly lost for words. The calmness of the canals, the winding streets taking you nowhere, and aroma of delectable Italian delicacies at every corner make you easily lose the track of time and space (and your smartphone battery!). This capital of northern Italy cannot be explored completely even in a month, forget about visiting in a day. For me, Italy is more than a tourist attraction. It was my first solo trip in Europe.

I am going to try avoiding the Tourist Guide-ish information. For travel itineraries and must-visit places, I followed google trips, lonely planet and Wikitravel. I’ll try to paint a picture as seen through my eyes. And of course, with some of the best captures from my Moto G5 Plus’ camera. So let’s begin!

Everyone visiting Venice starts their journey from the north side of the city at Santa Lucia train/bus station as no vehicles are allowed in Venice down south. The entire city is a manifestation of classic architecture. As they say, Venice is a dream in stones. Walking on small cobbled paths makes you realize that your museum tour has already started. The city is riddled with baroque architecture. The Saint Mark’s square is often considered as a city center of Venice and you will always experience a stream of tourists going in either way. The square is filled with major attractions of Venice, one of which is the Doge’s Palace or Palazzo Ducale.

Initially, I was mistaken that only ground floor was available for viewing which has pieces of historical architecture and sculptures. But boy was I wrong! The palace, which is an integral part of Venice, contains chambers having numerous paintings by popular artists, artifacts, and architectural marvels.

The famous pure golden staircase leads you to lavish rooms, including one which is the largest in Europe. Accompanying you will be the finest works of accomplished artists.

The palace is connected to the prisons via the popular ‘Bridge of Sighs’. After re-living the history for 2 and a half hours, I was still not able to get enough of this place.

The Saint Mark’s Basilica is not that impressive from inside but its terrace offers splendid views of Saint Mark’s square. You can take a sip of wine or take a bite of Italian Gelato while enjoying live music in the square.

After enjoying the mainstream attractions, do not forget to visit some of the hidden gems of Venice, e.g. San Pantalon church, which has a masterpiece painted on its ceiling. When it lights up, you can see its artistry and the depth effect.

But there are so many amazing places in Venice that I am not sure if even a month’s stay will be enough!

Having lived in the Netherlands, the canals are not a novelty to me. But there is something magical about the canals and bridges of Venice. While walking through cobbled, narrow alleyways, you get a feeling of playing hide and seek with the canals. You lose when you end up at a point where you have to cross the canal, but there is no bridge. Retrace your path and start afresh!

Sometimes during this game, you will reach a quiet, deserted alley. You will hear a faint noise of the bustle, the map will say that the streets filled with tourists are just a few meters away, but you will stay there, frozen in the time. At this very moment, you will realize that you have discovered the heart of Venice and also have won the game.

Generally, Venice is considered as the city of love. Indeed, you will see a lot of couples. Some even get married over here. Witnessing the sunset, they exchange their vows and then proceed to enjoy the gondola ride. Venetians often give a generous applause when a married couple comes over any bridge.

In Venice, you can easily travel on foot if you like walking. But when in Venice, do like Venetians do — ride Vaporettos (Water Buses). You can buy 1/2/3 or more days of Public transport pass which gives you free access to buses and Vaporettos. You can combine it with the museum card (not worthwhile in my opinion) and if you are a young student, you will get more discount! These Vaporettos ride in fixed routes and are not only convenient but also offer scenic views.

Standing on the deck as the boat cruises through city canals, you will enjoy the majestic shoreline of Venice. As the sun sets, hearing splashing sound of water while watching the city glimmering in a golden yellow colour pass by will be a treat to your senses.

You don’t need me to tell you how amazing the Italian food is. When you get tired, enjoy a delicious meal in pizzerias of Venice. You will find these at every corner in the city. Big restaurants have live music to accompany the great food. For sad solo souls like me, there are a number of places where you can get takeaway pizza or pasta and enjoy it while sitting on a bridge. You cannot complete your dinner without having a bite of Italian Gelato. There are so many varieties to choose from! My favourite is ‘Bacio’ which literally means a kiss!

If dark is your cup of coffee (see what I did there ;) ), Italian Moka pot coffee will not disappoint you. You can also try hundreds of coffee varieties from baristos like Torrefazione Cannaregio.

After the sightseeing and having quick lunch, I started walking from S. Mark’s square towards the train station. Crossing the Venetian Lagoon, I said Ciao to the charming city while promising myself to return soon. Now I was ready for my next adventure in not so popular, yet very beautiful part of Italy: Trieste!
